"Lucem sequimur" (We Follow The Light) - University of Exeter
The friendships made through involvement in sport at the University of Exeter last well beyond graduation. We are proud to have a flourishing alumni community through which alumni regularly meet up at a variety of events and carry out significant fundraising activity. Events include an annual Alumni Golf Day, a reception at Henley Royal Regatta and many alumni vs current student fixtures.
We also produce regular newsletters to keep our alumni up to date with developments and successes. To receive these updates and relevant event invitations, please ensure that the contact details we hold for you are kept up to date.
We're also able to put you in touch with former team mates and help to arrange reunions. Many Sports Clubs have active alumni scenes of their own and organise regular events for their former members. The Clubs below have particularly well developed alumni scenes:
The University has a very proud hockey heritage, and in 2016/17 were ranked in the Top 3 of UK universities for both Men's and Women's Hockey. More recently we have also become renowned as a major force in club hockey, with our Men's 1st XI competing in the National League Conference West and the Universirty Ladies Hockey Club has joined forces with local club ISCA to form a ISCA University side who also compete in the National League Conference West.
One of the University’s focus sports, our Student Golf Club is renowned for nurturing some of the brightest golfing talent and is one of the largest and most highly established golf clubs in the UK. We attract golfers with international level abilities to those who have never picked up a club before and we have programmes to suit every ability. As well as boasting strong representation in individual tour events, the club have been unbeaten in recent years having repeatedly won the premiership.
We host a number of golf events throughout the year that are open to all Exeter alumni and offer a fantastic opportunity to get together with university friends or network with fellow graduates from various graduating years. We are grateful to John Gilbert (Economics, 1972) who leads on the organisation of our golf events through the Exeter University Alumni Golf Society (EUAGS).
The origins of rugby at Exeter can be traced back to the early sides of St. Luke's College, which was founded in 1839, and held their first rugby match in 1860 against Exeter Grammar School. Before the merger between the two institutions in 1978, St Luke’s vs University fixtures were highlights of the Exeter sporting calendar. Since then, the University of Exeter has become renowned as a leading rugby institution with a great many students going on to play professional and international rugby. Our close links with local Aviva Premiership side Exeter Chiefs provide great benefit to the whole Club.
We have supported the development of many talented rowers with Exeter alumni competing at international level and at Olympic Games. Our Boat Club has a very active alumni scene, with a number of events held throughout the year to enable the University’s oarsmen and women to stay in touch with each other and their Club. The biggest date in the Boat Club calendar is the Henley Royal Regatta, held annually on the first weekend of July. The Club hosts a drinks reception for all alumni and supporters at Henley Cricket Club during the break from racing on the Saturday lunchtime.
Over many years the Exeter University Football Club has provided thousands of football playing students with memorable playing and social experiences. Many teams and individual students have achieved at national and local level, and many players have gone on to have impressive post-Exeter football careers in playing, coaching, management and administration.
The University of Exeter runs both a men's and women's cricket club, with four men's teams and two women's teams competing in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS).
