The SITE Seminar Series -Hitting Reset: Industry Evolution, Generational Technology Cycles, and the Dynamic Value of Firm Experience

In this study, we explore and unpack how the value of two types of experience – depth and breadth – shifts and changes across industry evolution and technological changes. In line with dynamic capabilities, experience breadth builds organizational flexibility that is especially valuable during technology transitions and when the industry is younger, while experience depth builds powerful resources that are especially important during the later periods of industry evolution and periods of technology stability. By testing our theory in the console video game industry, where game publishers face repeated periods of transition and stability across multiple console generations, we both reduce concerns about endogeneity and offer novel theory about how and why the value of experience depth – though reduced by transition – may generally increase over the industry's evolution, while experience breadth may correspondingly become less important over time.

Biography

Hakan Ozalp is an Assistant Professor in the Knowledge, Information & Innovation (KIN) Research Group at the Free University of Amsterdam. He holds his PhD in Business Administration and Management and MSc in Economics and Management of Innovation and Technology from Bocconi University. His research explores the impact of industrial and technological change on the platform ecosystems and on the firms, as well as the antecedents of these changes. His work has appeared in prestigious outlets such as Journal of Management Studies or Information Systems Research.
