Event details
“Without a protective ozone layer in the atmosphere, animals and plants could not exist, at least upon land. It is therefore of the greatest importance to understand the processes that regulate the atmosphere's ozone content.”
This quote comes from the announcement of the 1995 Nobel Prize for Chemistry to Paul Crutzen, Mario Molina, and F. Sherwood Rowland, and remains relevant today. Indeed, stratospheric ozone has been more recently identified as one of the nine ‘planetary boundaries’ within which humanity can safely operate. The influence of stratospheric ozone is not only confined to its ability to protect the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation. In this talk I will give an overview of recent work on the impacts of ozone depletion and its future recovery on the wider Earth system, with a focus on the large-scale circulation of the stratosphere, troposphere, and ocean.
