In view of the fact that four members of the Politics Department, and of our own Reading group, are presenting papers to the Second Venice World Multidisciplinary Conference on Republics and Republicanism, organized by the Venice International University Consortium of which Exeter is one of the members, we have decided to organize a special session of the Reading Group on the theme of Republicanism, of its many historical manifestations, of its revival in the historiography of political thought and in contemporary political theory. In the first part of the Reading Group, the four colleagues will briefly present their papers for the Conference, followed by a Q&A session. In the second part, Iain Hampsher-Monk will introduce a general discussion on Republicanism(s) and its revival.

Ross Carroll, An Ambiguous Heritage: Republican Argument in British Debates on the Abolition of the Slave Trade
