Exeter Food 2021-2022 Seminar Series

Food Systems are not Value Chains: Stories from the Field—Farm to Fork

A lecture by Michael S. Carolan, Professor of Sociology, Colorado State University (USA)

Event details

This lecture reviews a series of research projects that speak to various elements of food systems, from consumption and production to infrastructure, culture, gender, and mobility.  Included in this discussion are data collected pre- and post-outbreak, which tell a story about how the pandemic impacted certain Colorado households in terms of food procurement, preparation, and consumption.  Also reviewed are findings from a state-wide study of farmers and ranchers; data that help explain why views on some subjects (like climate change) seem an intractable political issue.  In sum, the discussion highlights some of what is missed when "food systems" are reduced to "value chains."

The seminar will be followed by Q&A, chaired by Exeter Food Coordinator, Prof. Harry G West.
