GSI Seminar - The Climate Change, Conflict and Migration Nexus - Tabitha Watson

Event details

Current discourse relating to climate change, conflict, migration, and the causal links thereof, is polarised. Whilst it is widely acknowledged that climate change will have a detrimental effect on quality of life, and that this impact will not be homogeneous across the globe, studies addressing these challenges remain somewhat siloed. Much of this debate revolves around whether it is reasonable to attribute a climate ‘signal’, directly or indirectly, to events with overt geopolitical triggers, such as the ongoing Syrian Civil War.

This talk will explore the evidence for and against there being a climate signal in the build-up to the Syrian Conflict and, through this lens, discuss how a tripartite modelling approach should form the basis of further study in this area. This case study will show how approaching climate change, conflict and migration as a nexus can begin to bridge the current gap and provide more representative quantitative evidence to progress the debate.

A Zoom link will be distributed on the day. If you want to join and are not on our mailing list please contact infoGSI@exeter.ac.uk
