Event details

Dear Colleagues, Students, Friends, IAIS and CSI Community,
I’d like to invite you to the first event of the Centre for the Study of Islam in this academic year, at 15:00-16:30 on Wednesday the 5th of October in IAIS, Lecture Theatre 2:
Sayed-Ismail AlBehbehani (PhD candidate, IAIS, University of Exeter)
The Gulf and Late Antiquity:
Persians and Zoroastrians in al-Bahrayn.

Abstract:
Revisionist studies of Islamic origins tend to exempt Arabia from Late Antique themes and culture, as they tend to focus on the formation of Islam outside of the Peninsula. However, each of the different cultural zones in Arabia had its own history and relation with regards to the antique and late antique oikumene. In my work I present the Persian and Zoroastrians in the Arabian side of the Gulf: emphasizing the region as home to different people and religions; denoting the western Gulf’s integration into the late antique Middle East, through ethnic, religious, and political links; presenting a ‘smooth’ Islamic conquest.

Please come to enjoy the presentation and support Ismail :  )
