‘Have you heard… Using Music as a Decolonising Tool’

The Music Research Network would like to invite you to expand conversations on decolonization through music.

(Please note this will be run as a hybrid event, both in person, and online.)

Decolonising, de-colonising, de/colonising, (de)colonising…

All these words have been increasingly heard in conversations about music education in recent years. The Music Research Network at the University of Exeter invites you to expand conversations on this important issue in relation to your own experiences and practice in a day of seminars and practical workshops which focus on creating ways of addressing decolonisation in any sphere of life through music. We will be opening up musical spaces where we invite you to address 'otherness' through listening, talking about/with and engaging with music, in a way that can give voice to all participants, regardless of their musical background or experience.

The Music Research Network invites music education practitioners, educationalists, researchers and creators to engage with them and others in this conversation by narrating how music has enabled them to engage, imagine, challenge or deal with colonisation of any kind.

The day will include a practical music making session led by early years music practitioner Eleanor Rashid. which is open to participants of all music backgrounds and abilities, discussion; and a key-note talk from Guillermo Rosabel-Coto, Professor of Music Education at Universidad de Costa Rica and Visiting Scholar at the Latin American Studies Program, University of Toronto, Canada, who will be joining us online from Costa Rica.
