Bibliometrics: Application to Language Education and Relevance to Postgraduate Research Projects

Increasingly, researchers and students are tasked with making sense of and keeping up-to-date with rapidly expanding and diversifying bodies of literature, requiring familiarity with online electronic indices of research (e.g., the Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar). One burgeoning methodological approach that can support researchers and students by providing powerful top-down insights into the state of a particular discipline, research interest, or academic publication is bibliometrics, which refers to the application of mathematical and statistical methods to the study of academic publication. This 90-minute session will provide participants with a deep dive into bibliometric analysis, addressing what the approach involves, how it has been applied to language education, how such studies can be undertaken, and the potential relevance of bibliometric knowledge and skills to undertaking research projects in language education. The session will feature a combination of input and skills development, so please bring along a laptop or tablet. I would also recommend bookmarking the two research indices we will cover in the session, the Web of Science and Scopus, and making sure you are able to access them using your University of Exeter account details.
