Abstract: This talk will focus on Dženita Karić’s book Bosnian Hajj Literature: Multiple Paths to the Holy and will look into the process which led to the research on Bosnian Hajj culture. It will cover several topics, such as the importance of the longue durée approach for understanding continuity and persistence of piety in Islam, the devotional turn in Islamic Studies, as well as the importance of centering the Balkans in historical and religious studies. The talk will zoom in on certain case studies presented in the book and will point to possible further pathways in the research of devotional piety in Islam.

Bio: Dženita Karić is assistant professor in religious studies and cultural heritage at the University of Amsterdam. Before coming to Amsterdam, she worked in Sarajevo (Oriental Institute in Sarajevo) and Berlin (Berlin Institute for Islamic Theology, Humboldt University in Berlin). She obtained her PhD at SOAS (University of London) in 2018. Karić is the author of two books: Postcolonial Palestinian Novel (Oriental Institute in Sarajevo, 2011) and Bosnian Hajj Literature: Multiple Paths to the Holy (Edinburgh University Press, 2022), as well as the author of a number of articles.
