Protein Power workshop: interdisciplinary approaches to protein transitions

SR 11 The Steve Edge Room /Forum, and on Teams

This event brings together scholars from across disciplines to explore new methods for facilitating a much needed but publicly controversial protein transition.

Event details

Abstract

There is overwhelming scientific evidence to support the holistic benefits of a diet rich in plant-based foods and with fewer animal source foods. In his recently published National Food Strategy, Henry Dimbleby targets a 30% reduction in meat consumption over the next decade, for both health and environmental reasons. Meat reduction, however, was by far the most contentious issue raised in 'deliberative dialogues' with citizens, prompting fierce arguments between 'instantaneous tribes.'

The aim of the workshop is to facilitate a conversation across disciplinary boundaries, with a particular focus on “nudging” and its use with relation to meat reduction, dietary change and the health and sustainability agenda. We are especially keen to explore the opportunities and challenges to engage humanities research with ongoing work on diet and meat consumption in the sciences and social sciences. In our discussion, we hope to focus on the emotions of meat-eating, gender and meat consumption, and the relationship between narrative and consumption habits.

This event is supported by a “University of Exeter and Universität Hamburg – Research Travel Grant.” There will be light refreshments at the workshop.
