CBS Seminar: Emma Turner- 15-year outcomes from cluster RCTs for prostate cancer screening and treatment: The CAP and ProtecT trials.

We are pleased to invite you to this CBS Seminar with Emma Turner, Research Fellow from Bristol Medical School.

Event details

Abstract

Emma will talk about her prostate cancer work including the cluster randomised trial of PSA testing for prostate cancer (CAP) trial and the linked ProtecT (Prostate testing for cancer and treatment) trial.

CAP followed-up over 400,000 participants aged 50 to 69 years identified at 573 primary care practices in England and Wales for a median of 15-years published April 2024 in JAMA.  Men were randomised to a single invitation for a PSA blood test or standard NHS practice (Prostate cancer risk management programme).  Compared with no invitation for routine PSA testing, a single invitation for a PSA screening test reduced prostate cancer mortality at a median follow-up of 15 years, but the absolute mortality benefit was small.

ProtecT is the longest running study of its kind, evaluating three major treatment options for men with localised prostate cancer.  Between 1999 and 2009, 1,643 men aged 50-69 years across the UK, who were diagnosed with localised prostate cancer after a PSA blood test, agreed to be randomised to active monitoring, radical prostatectomy, or radical radiotherapy. Median 15-year results from ProtecT were published March 2023 in NEJM. After 15-years prostate cancer specific mortality remained low regardless of the treatment assigned.

This will be a hybrid seminar with the speaker presenting live in-person in the EMS Building, room G18, St Luke's campus. There is also the option join virtually via  Zoom:
