EGENIS seminar: "Towards a participatory ethics of sentience" Dr Laura Candiotto (University of Pardubice)

Egenis seminar series

Sentience, as the capacity to feel pleasure and pain, is often understood as a prop¬erty of an organism, and the main problem is to determine whether an organism possesses this property or not. Assessing if it is the case is far from simple and there is no stable agreement about it. This is the problem of sentience.

Event details

I argue that there is a problem intrinsic to the problem of sentience, i.e.,  the “metaproblem of sentience”, and that its assumptions create the “problem of sentience”. How does the problem of sentience change if we do not follow these implicit assumptions? I advance some steps towards a participatory ethics of sentience grounded on a relational account of the transcendental argument in ethical discourse. It is not just that life can be known only by life. Life can be cared for only by life.
