Mandana Limbert - On Zakat, Prayer, and the Territorial State in Southern Arabia

CGS Virtual Seminar Series

Event details

This paper explores contesting notions of homeland in the first half of the twentieth century in Oman. In particular, and through discussions about zakat and prayer among Omani religious scholars as well as British and American officials, it examines differing perspectives on what constitutes a polity at a time when the territorial nation-states of the Arabian Peninsula were forming. In so doing, the paper also argues that in this moment of extreme flux anti-colonial discourses on homeland were not necessarily articulated in or conceived along nationalist, territorial, or nativist terms.
