This workshop will be an opportunity to stop and think what difference our work may make to the wider world. It will be an opportunity to discuss how our research may promote global sustainability efforts and broaden the societal relevance of our work in language-related fields. This can be discussed as impact in research outputs, and communicated more widely.
As you may know, the SDGs are a set of 17 global objectives established by the United Nations to address pressing challenges such as poverty, inequality, health, education, and climate action, with the ultimate aim of creating a sustainable and equitable world by 2030. The goals range from eradicating hunger (SDG 2) to ensuring quality education for all (SDG 4), and promoting gender equality (SDG 5), to name a few. (https://www.un.org/en/exhibits/page/sdgs-17-goals-transform-world)
Our workshop will provide a platform to discuss and reflect on how our research may contribute to achieving one or more of these SDGs. Whether through enhancing quality and inclusivity in education, promoting global citizenship, or addressing disparities in access to language learning opportunities, language education and related areas of study has the potential to play a significant role in advancing these global aims.
Through reflection and discussion, we aim to:
- Identify key areas where our work can support specific SDGs.
- Share research findings and best practices that align with the SDG framework.
- Explore new research avenues that may contribute to sustainable development.
- Build interdisciplinary collaborations to maximize the impact of our work.
This workshop is organised jointly by the Language Education Network (School of Education) and the Dept. for Languages, Cultures and Visual Studies.
