November 2023 marked 20 years since the repeal of Section 28, a piece of homophobic legislation that banned the “promotion of homosexuality” by schools and local authorities.
The ‘Section 28 and its afterlives’ project responded to this anniversary by exploring the impact of this legislation on the LGBTQ+ community, particularly in the South West. Because Section 28 aimed to silence LGBTQ+ individuals, we have given voice to their experiences by recording oral history interviews and creating a new archive. In this session, we will present an overview of our activities and research findings.
