EGENIS seminar: "Mind Matters: A Sociology of Dementia Diagnosis" Dr Alexandra Hillman (University of Exeter)
Egenis seminar series
This talk will sketch out a sociology of dementia diagnosis, one that progresses a dialectical approach to the study of dementia’s construction and its experience. This approach firstly engages with critical questions over the dominant assumptions about what dementia is and secondly contextualises dementia, both its classification and its experience, within wider networks of meaning and systems of value.

Event details
Drawing on ethnographic research spanning more than a decade, this talk will reflect on observations and recordings of U.K memory clinic consultations, interview accounts with clinic staff, internationally recognised dementia researchers, and with people living with dementia and their families both after diagnosis and as their condition progresses. The talk will use reflections on this data to promote a discussion about both current approaches to the diagnosis of dementias and to consider future directions.
