CGAFD Seminar: Early warnings of the transition to a superrotating atmospheric state

Dr Mark Williamson (Exeter) will talk about his work on the transition to atmospheric superrotation as a tipping point.

Abstract

Climate models have transitioned to a superrotating atmospheric state under a broad range of warm climates. Such a transition would change global weather patterns should it occur. Here I simulate this transition using an idealized climate model and look for any early warnings of the superrotating state before it happens. I find several early warning indicators that I attribute to an oscillating pattern in the windfield fluctuations. I'll also show several CMIP6 models that transition to a superrotating state under high global warming scenarios.
