Abstract
Empirical studies in cognitive neuroscience typically investigate participants’ unaided performance of experimental tasks. But in everyday life we often extend our cognitive abilities with external artefacts, for example using a diary or smartphone to set reminders for intended behaviours. I will describe some recent research investigating this phenomenon: how do participants choose whether or not to outsource cognitive control to the environment, and what neurocognitive consequences does this behaviour have?
Dr Sam Gilbert from the UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience., will be giving a seminar with the title 'Outsourcing’ cognitive control into the external environment'.
The Think-Tank seminar series is organised by Dr Anke Karl, Dr Henrietta Roberts and Michelle Tester-Jones.
