Inaugural lectures: Professors William Henley and Colin Green, “The numbers driving our health service”

Colin Green, Professor of Health Economics:
“Wants? Values? & Choices? Health economics and its role in improving population health”. Colin Green has spent 20 years applying economics to the problems faced in allocating health care resources. His research has covered questions on how we may measure the benefits of health care interventions, questions on whether specific interventions represent ‘value for money’ for the NHS, and broader questions on what the NHS should pay for? He seeks to use economics to explain why we make the choices we do about our health and health care.

William Henley, Professor of Medical Statistics:
“Observing improvements: fair comparisons of interventions using electronic health record data”. William Henley is an applied statistician with wide-ranging experience of collaborative research in industry and academia. His current research is focused on making use of large electronic medical record databases to estimate effectiveness of medical treatments. He will describe some of the challenges in exploiting these emerging data sources that have led him to be involved in the development of new statistical methodology.
