Learning, Knowing, Doing seminar series - Evidence-based policy-making and the art of commissioning: what researchers need to know to make a difference

It is widely recognised that research has limited impact on policy and practice. This presentation includes findings from a major NIHR study on the information-seeking practices of local policy-makers (aka commissioners) and how information, including research evidence, is interwoven into the decision-making process, when practising the ‘art of commissioning’. Dr Wye will also provide early findings from her NIHR Knowledge Mobilisation Fellowship as a ‘researcher-in-residence’ at Bristol Clinical Commissioning Group. The aim of her fellowship is to build collaborations between commissioners and researchers through the vehicle of service evaluations. Clear learning points and recommendations for other researchers who want to make a difference will be given.

Lesley Wye is a Senior Research Fellow and NIHR Knowledge Mobilisation Fellow at the Centre for Academic Primary Care, School of Social and Community Medicine, University of Bristol. She also is Deputy Director of Impact for the School. She manages the Knowledge Mobilisation team of two other researchers-in-residence, two NHS fellows seconded into academic primary care and a communications manager. Findings from the experiences of managing this team will also be presented. Previous appointments include the King’s Fund and the Department of Health.
