Introduced by the director, Eileen Jerrett:
"Blueberry Soup is an extraordinary documentary about the constitutional change in Iceland following the financial crisis of 2008. This is a not-well-known-story of grassroots constitutionalism, an inspiration to the rest of the world. The film is a deeply touching account of an eclectic group of individuals reinventing democracy through the rewriting of the nation's constitution." (http://www.wilmaswishes.com)
NB: Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
As mainstream debate in the UK focuses on the nature of devolution, independence and Britishness, this film will help us think about other important questions relating to power and democracy:
- Where should sovereignty lie?
- What is the relationship between popular democracy and economic power, or elitism?
- How might we think about the limits of devolution, or 'devo-max'?
- What is 'people power' in a globalised world order?
- What form should activism take?
This film will help you rethink what's at stake in the project of re-constitutionalising states in the contemporary globalised world order, and who can and ought to be part of that process.
Come and join us for a screening and discussion of this timely film. Dr Alex Prichard (Politics), will open up the discussion afterwards with a few comments on the relationship of constitutionalism to radical politics more generally.
