Visiting Speaker: Ramita Navai

City of Lies: Reporting the Truth in Tehran

Sponsored by the Centre for Persian and Iranian Studies

Event details

When Ramita Navai’s press card was revoked she began collecting stories from South Tehran – a world that the regime did not want its own people to see, never mind outsiders.  A dark and unseen Tehran is revealed through the lives of eight characters drawn from across the social spectrum.  As well as an insight into a modern, sophisticated and fast-changing city corrupted by sexual repression and politics, this is Navai’s love letter to her country and gives real Tehranis a voice.

Ramita Navai is an award winning foreign affairs journalist.  She has reported from over 35 countries and made 20 documentaries for Channel 4’s Unreported World.  Her PBS Frontline documentary, "Syria Undercover", won an Emmy in 2012 and her latest feature for Channel 4 News won the Foreign Press Association’s News Story of the Year in 2015.  She is the former Tehran correspondent for The Times and her first book, "City of Lies: Love, Sex, Death and the Search for Truth in Tehran", won Debut Political Book of the Year at the Political Book Awards and the Royal Society of Literature's Jerwood award for a work in progress
