Dr Ghassan Khatib is the Vice President for Development at Birzeit University (Palestine) and a former Minister of Labor (2002-5), Planning (2005-6) and Acting Minister of Health (2005-6) for the Palestinian National Authority.

He was born in Nablus, in the West Bank, and is a member of the Palestinian People’s Party.  He was formerly the Director of the Jerusalem Media and Communications Centre (JMCC) and headed media relations for the government of Prime Minister Salam Fayyad (2009-12).

He was a member of the Palestinian Negotiating Team at the Madrid Peace Delegation in 1991 and was involved in the Washington negotiations from 1991 to 1993.

Dr Khatib holds a PhD in Middle East Politics from Durham University and regularly lectures at the Cultural Studies Program of Birzeit University.  He was also a member of the Joint Working Group on Israeli-Palestinian Relations at Harvard University (1991-2005).

Among his most recent publications are Palestinian Politics and the Middle East Peace Process. Consensus and Competition in the Palestinian Negotiation Team (London: Routledge, 2011); and ‘Constrained and Now Corrosive: How Palestinians View the US Role,’ in Daniel Kurtzer (ed.), Pathways to Peace (London: Routledge, 2012).
