Immigrants and Religious Values: Mandaeans as an Example
Professor Buckley will speak about the Mandaeans, one of the world’s most endangered religious minorities. They are the last Gnostics still living in the Middle East from ancient times, but in the current situation, they are leaving their homeland for the diaspora. Professor Buckley is a leading scholar in the history and religion of the Mandaeans; she has also spent many years doing advocacy work for the Mandaeans. She is also an academic adviser to our research project “The Worlds of Mandaean Priestsâ€, so we are particularly happy to welcome her to Exeter.

Event details
Professor Buckley, a historian of religions (comparative perspective), works in Gnostic religions, particularly with the Mandaeans, who are the last, still-living Near Eastern Gnostics from ancient times. She has involvement with the Mandaeans themselves, including advocacy, especially in political and religious asylum cases on behalf of Mandaeans.
Since the late 1970s, Professor Buckley has held official positions in the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature. She has taught more than 40 courses in 12 institutions over a 30 year period. Her background in psychology and philosophy continues to inform her focus on myths, rituals, and theory and method in the study of religion.
