A lecture by Professor Elizabeth de Freitas (Manchester Metropolitan University: Affect, sympathy and the felt experience of form

This lecture turns to affect theory and the role of sympathy in teaching and learning, with particular focus on movement and more-than-human relationality. I discuss the link between movement and emotion in learning processes, and show how form (as conceptual content) is involved. I will analyze a case study, and draw from the theories of Gilles Deleuze, Brian Massumi, Maxine Sheets-Johnston, and Lars Spuybroek.

Elizabeth de Freitas holds a Research Chair in the Education and Social Research Institute at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her research focuses on philosophical and anthropological investigations of learning processes, and she writes extensively on social science research methodology, with particular attention to current digital methods. Much of her work examines gesture, sensation, and material practices in various kinds of STEM activity, with the aim of developing a new materialist pedagogy of the concept. She has published five books and over fifty chapters and articles on a range of education topics.
