Dr Estella Carpi (University College London) presents "From Livelihoods to Leisure: Upending Refugee Self-Reliance and Urban Humanitarianism in Lebanon"

Estella Carpi is a Research Associate in the Migration Research Unit, Department of Geography (University College London). She is currently working on southern-led humanitarian responses to displacement from Syria (ERC project no. 541123). She received her PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Sydney (Australia), researching humanitarianism in Lebanon. She has been working on humanitarian aid provision, welfare, forced migration and identity politics for several institutions in Egypt, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates.

Abstract
Focusing on the aftermath of the 2011–2015 forced migration from Syria to the city of Halba in northern Lebanon, in this talk I will discuss refugee livelihood practices vis-à-vis international humanitarian programming. By highlighting the limits of building top-down forms of refugee self-reliance in this long-term displacement setting, I rethink humanitarian livelihood programmes as a means to leisure. In this framework, the increasingly debated 'urban-humanitarian' nexus as a way to support refugee self-reliance is unable to grasp the articulated character of Halba's resources and infrastructure.
