Professor Jaakko Hameen-Anttila (Edinburgh University) presents the talk "From Middle Persian to Arabic, from Arabic to Persian: notes on first-millennium translations"

Jaakko Hameen-Anttila earned his PhD in 1994 from the University of Helsinki. He was Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies in the same University from 2000 to 2016. Currently, since 2016 he is the Iraq Chair of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Edinburgh. He has published extensively on Classical Arabic literature, Arab-Islamic cultural history, and cultural contacts between Iran and the Arabs.

Abstract
The paper will discuss translations from Middle Persian to Arabic and, later, back from Arabic to Classical Persian. Special attention will be given to historiographical literature, as well as the general question of what translating meant in the first millennium.
Tea and coffee will be served in the IAIS Common Room from 17:00. Everyone is welcome to attend and registration is not necessary.
