Making SPAce: Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology (SPA) student PGR conference

We are delighted to announce that the Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology (SPA) student PGR conference is scheduled to take place on Thursday and Friday 16th and 17th May 2019.

This year, we want to use the conference as a platform to ask, what does SPA mean? Can we become a fully interdisciplinary department or an aggregate of disciplines learning to converse? What kinds of critical, dialogic spaces can we create and support within the department?

Making SPAce aims to both provoke and inform these practical yet conceptual questions.

Over two days, the conference will include a panel discussion on the challenges and potentials of working productively in and between our disciplines, a film screening, artist performance and inventive methods workshops. We are very pleased to confirm that our keynote speaker is Jennifer Gabrys (University of Cambridge, formerly Goldsmiths) whose research investigates environments, digital technologies and citizen participation through theoretical and practice-based work. She is Principal Investigator on Citizen Sense and AirKit, two related projects funded by the European Research Council.

Call for Student Presentations

Most importantly, the conference offers PGR students an opportunity to present their research to an audience of sociologists, anthropologists and philosophers. This is an excellent opportunity to share your own research in a friendly and supportive environment and to get to know what other PhD students are working on. Everyone is welcome! We are happy to have abstracts on any topic within the department's three disciplines whilst also encourage those which may confront questions of interdisciplinarity. The abstract should be approximately 300 words, include a title and be sent to ssis-spa-pgrconference@exeter.ac.uk.  Your presentation at the conference should be between 15-20 minutes.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is Monday 8th April.
