IOW-ARCH Indian Ocean World Archaeology Conference
Reasearch meeting/conference on the archaeology, material culture and heritage of the Indian Ocean
We are in the process of establishing an annual or biennial research meeting/conference on the archaeology, material culture and heritage of the Indian Ocean (defined as from East Africa to Japan, including Australasia) from the first millennium BC to the contemporary era. The model is likely to be similar to the annual Islamic Archaeology Day at University College London, but lasting perhaps up to two-days and with the location moving between different academic host institutions. The first conference is being held at the Institute of Arab and Islamic studies (IAIS), University of Exeter, with financial sponsorship provided by the Centre for Islamic Archaeology.

Event details
The idea is born out of the significant growth in Indian Ocean archaeology that has taken place in recent years, and the fact that there is still no regular forum where researchers can meet, present on their latest research, get to know each other, and discuss relevant topics. The aim is for the forum to be international, informal and research-focussed.
The first meeting will take place in Exeter on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th January 2020. The session will begin on Friday 10th at 13.00 with registration, followed by presentations and a meeting to discuss the aims and objectives of IOW-Arch. This will be followed by an exhibition opening in the IAIS Street Gallery (entitled Chinese Ceramics in East Africa: Consumption, Display and Modification from the 9th century to Today) accompanied by buffet and wine reception. Presentations will be on Saturday 11th from 9:00 (registration from 8:30) until 18.30 followed by conference dinner.
Papers. Presentations are welcome on all aspects of the archaeology, material culture and heritage of the Indian Ocean, as defined above. Presentations should be in English and must not exceed 15 minutes. Power Point facilities will be available.
To apply please submit:
