College of benefactors 2022
In acknowledgment of the importance of philanthropy, the University of Exeter invites its most generous donors to become members of the prestigious College of Benefactors. Induction into the College is the highest honour that the University can bestow upon its donors. Established in 2006, membership of the College gives public recognition to the University’s greatest benefactors. The Halpin Trust will be the 21st member to be welcomed into the College during Winter graduation, this December.
For more members of the University's College of Benefactors see the Alumni and Supporters website.
The Halpin Trust
Thursday 14 December 2022 2:00pm
We are delighted to welcome Claire Halpin, Nick Talbot and Susie Hills, Trustees of the Halpin Trust, to the University of Exeter’s College of Benefactors. The charitable trust established in 2013 by Exeter alumni, the late Les Halpin (Mathematical Statistics and Op. Research, 1979) and Claire Halpin (Biology, 1979), supports projects that make a real impact, and change lives, whilst solving some of the biggest challenges facing today’s world.
Since 2011, the Halpin Trust has generously donated more than £500,000 to the University to support areas of work in line with their interests in the environment and medical research. In 2021, the Trust made two further meaningful philanthropic gifts to support: the establishment of ‘The Halpin Trust PhD Studentship’ with Professor Andrew Crosby and Dr Emma Baple at the University of Exeter Medical School to undertake research to develop a new blood test for motor neurone degenerative diseases, and ‘The Halpin Trust Wildflower Collective Project’ led by Professor Juliet Osborne. This project aims to understand whether growing wildflowers as a crop in Cornwall offers economic as well as ecological benefits to the region.
Dominic Scriven OBE
Thursday 23 June 2022 3:00pm
We are delighted to welcome Dominic Scriven, Executive Chairman and Co-Founder of Dragon Capital, to the University of Exeter’s College of Benefactors. Dominic graduated in sociology and Law in 1985 and has generously supported the University’s research over several years, initially by funding the Scriven Global Eco Services Research Initiative at our Cornwall campus.
In 2019 Dominic made a further visionary philanthropic gift to support the establishment of a new Professorship: ‘The Dragon Capital Chair in Biodiversity Economics.’ Hosted within the Land Environment, Economics and Policy Institute (LEEP) at the University of Exeter Business School, the post-holder, Professor Ben Groom, works with colleagues to addresses the central question of how individuals and organisations value natural resources. His work looks to understand how much people are willing to pay to maintain current biodiversity, and identify strategies which are both positive for biodiversity and provide incentives for action by business and individuals.
James Goulding
Monday 11 July 2022 9:00am
We are delighted to welcome James Goulding Founder of LimeTree Capital Partners, to the University of Exeter’s College of Benefactors. James graduated in Accountancy Studies in 1986 and has generously supported research at the University, initially by funding the James Goulding Fellowship with the aim of understanding how perceptions of China are created and sustained.
In 2021 James made a further meaningful philanthropic gift to support the establishment of the LimeTree Capital PhD China Scholarship Fund. The Fund provides additional support to Chinese PhD students at the University of Exeter in a broad range of subjects, enabling them to complete their studies and to expand the scope and quality of their research, and to make the most of the opportunities available to them in the UK.
