University sees historic growth in donations

The University of Exeter has witnessed donor numbers increase by a record 85 percent over the past five years.

In 2017/18 nearly 3,300 alumni and supporters made a financial donation to Exeter’s ‘Making the Exceptional Happen’ Campaign, up from 1,775 in 2013/14.

This rise also means that, over the last three years, the University of Exeter has averaged the highest growth rate of donor numbers in the Russell Group.

Gerry Brown, alumnus and Chair of the University’s Campaign Board said: “It is incredibly humbling to see so many individuals getting behind the work we are doing here at Exeter. Over the past few years we have worked hard to share the stories of innovative research and student achievements and it is wonderful that people have seen both the potential of the University and also the impact that their individual contributions can make.”

Donations have supported vital medical research, conservation projects around the world, entrepreneurial activity, and advanced engineering developments. They have also funded bursaries to help students achieve their academic and sporting potential, and allowed societies to expand the range of extra-curricular activities on offer across campuses.

Dr Shaun Curtis, Director of Global Advancement at the University of Exeter, said: “Philanthropic donations have a tremendous impact on the work of the University so this increase in support is hugely significant. During this time of uncertainty surrounding university funding it is particularly important that we continue to work with our community of alumni and supporters on the areas they are keen to advance. A huge thank you to all our donors.”

Making the Exceptional Happen, the University’s largest ever philanthropy campaign, aims to raise £60 million by 2020 and is currently closing in on £50 million. To learn more and get involved visit exeter.ac.uk/exceptional
