Policies on Use of Animals in Research and Teaching
Animal Ethics
Animal research in the UK is strictly regulated under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act (ASPA). For all projects with a scientific or educational purpose involving ‘protected’ animals, the researchers carrying out the procedures, and the institution itself, must each be licensed by the Home Office. We support researchers in line with our Policy on Working with Animals. All projects involving animals outside the scope of ASPA are reviewed by Ethics Committees whose members include experts in animal welfare. To find out more, please see our Animals in Research page.
