Data visualisation workshop
How to effectively communicate with your data - a workshop delivered by Dan Isaac
The aim of this workshop is to share and discuss the some key principles for effective data visualisation and to inspire you to start to tell better stories with your data. Creating effective data visualisations is no longer a task for highly technical specialists and design professionals. In the modern workplace, we are all responsible for the data that we produce and learning how to effectively communicate with this data can be an invaluable asset.
Learning the fundamental principles behind good data visualisation can:
- Simplify the process of presenting data in tables and graphs.
- Help those working with data to engage, captivate and influence their audience.
- Ensure that the story being presented can be easily understood.
- Allow decision-maker to get answers more quickly.
- The workshop is aimed at anyone who works with data as part of their role. From administrators, analysts and accountants to researchers, teachers and senior managers, we can all benefit from learning the theory behind creating great graphics.
Workshop Learning Objectives
By the end of the workshop, delegates will be able to:
- Critically review a data visualisation and understand what makes one example more effective than another.
- Understand some key psychological principles and their significance to the design of an effective data visualisation. This includes an understanding of the importance of storytelling when communicating with data.
- Present data clearly within a table in order to effectively communicate a story.
- Identify and utilise the key components within graphical representations of data.
- Select the type of graph which best communicates the different relationships that exist within data.
- Present data clearly within a selected graph type in order to effectively communicate a story.
Booking a workshop
Book your place at an upcoming public workshop
Please note that the public workshop that was scheduled for Wednesday 4th June 2025 has had to be re-arranged. If you were interested in attending this event then please contact Dan Isaac.
I am happy to book public workshops in locations across the UK and beyond. If your organisation would be interested in hosting a public event or if you'd like to be added to our waiting list then please get in touch (D.J.Isaac@exeter.ac.uk).
Book an in-house workshop for your organisation
In addition to public workshops, I also run in-house data visualisation training for any organisation that's interested. These sessions can either be run at the organisation's premises or they can be run using facilities at the University of Exeter. If you're interested in running or hosting one of these events then please get in touch or e-mail D.J.Isaac@exeter.ac.uk.
I have previously run in-house workshops for a number of organisations including teams from the NHS, universities and the private sector. The training is relevant to any data visualisation tool and to any type of data that you may need to visualise. Please get in touch and I'd be happy to discuss how we can make this training work best for you.
About the trainer - Dan Isaac
I am the Data Literacy & Training Lead at Exeter and I want to help you improve the way you communicate with your data. Inspired by the idea of bringing effective data visualisation practices to everyday roles and challenges, I have been running workshops at the University since 2013.
My training style has been described as “natural”, “engaging” and “approachable”; I like to think I have a unique combination of knowledge, skills and experience needed to offer practical training and guidance on how best to communicate with data using everyday tools for everyday challenges.
