Themes
Based on areas of shared expertise and priority, collaboration between Exeter and IIT Delhi is focused on a number of key areas:
Sport Science, Rehabilitation, and Elite Performance
The University of Exeter is ranked 1st in the UK’s Research Excellence Framework for research in the Sport, Exercise and Nutrition Science theme. Exeter’s ranks 27th globally for Sports Related subjects in the QS Subject World Rankings. In addition to a Sports Biomechanics research facility and another human movement science research facility at Hauz Khas campus, IITD is developing an increased focus on Sports Science and Sports Medicine, establishing a ‘National Centre for Performance Enhancement and Injury Prevention in Sports’ to support the boom in sporting opportunities in India, and pursue a wide variety of novel education and research initiatives in the injury prevention, rehabilitation, and elite performance space.
The Exeter - IIT Delhi partnership is a synergistic coming together of IIT Delhi’s engineering, product development, and human movement science expertise, with Exeter’s knowledge around human testing, improving performance, and supporting rehabilitation. Working with partners in industry and aligned with UK and Indian government priorities, this thematic focuses on meeting the needs of ever-developing sporting sector.
Climate Science, Environmental Data, and Clean Energy
Both Exeter and IITD have strong records of engaging with corporate partners on clean energy. IIT Delhi has long led research into climate change and energy science in India. The Centre for Atmospheric Sciences at IIT Delhi was the first academic entity in India to offer degree programs in atmospheric and oceanic sciences. The University of Exeter is home to 1500 people involved in research and impact work to address the impacts of climate change and the ecological crisis, including 5 of the world’s top 21 highest cited climate scientists.[1]
Climate change and clean energy are areas of strategic priority for partnership working between the governments of UK and India. There is a strong demand for HEIs to engage with industry to facilitate a smooth transition to net zero. Together, Exeter and IIT Delhi will seek to develop new technologies, conduct cutting edge research, and work with industry to tackle the climate and energy challenges facing our countries.
Operations Research, AI, and Automation
The UK-India research partnership has a strong focus on encouraging collaboration in AI, machine learning, and systems research. Exeter and IT Delhi are leaders in the fields of Data Science and AI and have built effective collaborations around data science and operations research. Focuses to date have included modelling and simulation applied in areas of manufacturing and logistics, smart manufacturing and engineering applications, climate data, and healthcare operations.
Under this theme, our researchers and students have the opportunity to collaborate on fundamental issues of how data, systems, and AI can support us with some of the major global challenges facing the world.
