Microsoft Project is a project management tool for organising and tracking project progress.

Project is essentially a database that allows you to enter the planned stages of a project and relate them to each other. It allows you to include as much detail as you need (duration, costs, dependency on other stages, allowances for slippage time, etc) and includes simple graphical tools for relating the stages to each other and to the overall project.

There is a comprehensive set of reporting tools allowing you to easily produce charts, schedules and listings of the project stages and resources. In conjunction with the calendar function within the program, this allows real-time tracking of the project and gives a clear overview of its progress. Amendments to the project can be made at any time, and are immediately reflected in the reports and screen displays.

The Help system in Project offers definitive help on using the software and an excellent account of the principles and practice of project management. The Project Map feature gives a breakdown of how to run a project, and the Tutorial gives a step by step introduction to project management principles.
