Research Participants

Participant Information

If you are taking part in research you should have been given detailed information about the research study that you are participating in.  You should be fully aware of the purpose of any research you are taking part in, be free to take part without coercion or penalty, and be able to withdraw without giving a reason and without the threat of any adverse effect.  If you have any questions about what taking part in a specific research study will entail, please ask the lead researcher in the first instance.  You should be able to find their contact details on the study's information sheet.

Withdrawal and complaints

If you wish to withdraw from a research study, or have any complaints about it, please contact the person listed on the participant information sheet.  If you are unable to locate the contact details on the information you have been supplied, please email the Research Ethics and Governance Team on cgr-reg@exeter.ac.uk who will try and help.

How we use your data

The information provided to you about a research study should give details about how your information will be used by researchers.  The University process personal data gathered by researchers for the purposes of carrying out research in the public interest.  You can view a copy of our privacy notice for research participants to find out more.

Payments for research participation

Some, but not all, studies offer payments to participate in research.  Where payments can be offered, these can do no more than reimburse the reasonable costs of participating in research, such as the costs of travel and subsistence, and compensation for your time.  Please see further information about payments for voluntary research participation to learn more.
