Exeter hosts 'Global Thought Network' with Fudan University
The University of Exeter was proud to host the inaugural in-person Global Thought Network Symposium on 5 and 6 June 2024, in collaboration with our Network partner Fudan University.
The Global Thought Network is an interdisciplinary network facilitating cross-cultural exchange and collaboration between academics at the University of Exeter and Fudan University.
The first ever Global Thought Network Symposium featured a wide range of thought-provoking panels and new research at Exeter and Fudan in fields ranging from arts, culture, literature, politics, philosophy, sociology and history.
Please find the Symposium Programme here.
In the last three years, the network has organised different types of online events and seminars to share knowledge and expertise. In 2024, the Network launched its first in-person Symposium event, allowing for more in-depth and wide-ranging discussion of research initiatives and the chance to identify and pursue opportunities for collaboration between our two universities.
Our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lisa Roberts, inaugurated the symposium, and Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gareth Stansfield, of the Faculty of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS), delivered the keynote address on understanding (post) conflict societies in the Middle East, taking Iraq as a case.
Professor Lisa Roberts said: It was an enormous pleasure to host the Global Thought Symposium, and to meet with our friends from Fudan University. Fudan and Exeter share a common mission and are both committed to the delivery of world-class teaching and research in the Humanities, so that we can make a real impact and empower our students to become global leaders. By coming together in this way, we further strengthen our partnership and forge new collaborations that will pave the way to a greener, healthier, and fairer world. I have tremendous confidence that the Global Thought Network will inspire Fudan and Exeter towards a positive and impactful future.
The two-day symposium was a rich and diverse intellectual feast, featuring 25 speakers and nearly 50 participants from both universities. The six sessions covered various topics, including history and philosophies of science, politics and international relations, culture and contemporary global issues, literature and translation, and literature, philosophy, and political thought.
Reflecting on the symposium and the success of the Network, Professor Li Li said: The network is a platform to generate more links and deep connections between academics. Over the years, my colleagues from Exeter and Fudan have contributed so much to developing the network and making it a space to facilitate meaningful collaboration, build a strong community for all, bring our expertise together, engage in dialogues and learn from multiple perspectives, strengthen cross-culture exchanges, and enhance interdisciplinary engagement. We particularly value the early career researchers and PhD students' contributions and their initiatives. I look forward to working with everyone to grow the network more.
The 2025 Exeter-Fudan Global Thought Network will be hosted at Fudan University, with details to follow.
