UKCHA Conference (Wuhan University, 10-11 November 2023)
UPDATE: The deadline for submission of abstracts has been extended to 15 August 2023
We are delighted to announce that the UK-China Humanities Alliance Conference 2023 will be hosted in-person at Wuhan University on 10, 11 November 2023.
The overall theme of the Conference will be Shared Visions: Humanities in Retrospect and Prospect.
The Call for Papers is now open, and we welcome applications from academic members of staff from across the UKCHA Membership. The new deadline for submission of abstracts is 15 August 2023, and the Call for Papers can be found here (.pdf)
Please note that papers should address topics identified within one of the four main sub-themes for the Conference:
- Literatures, World Histories and Intercultural Dialogue and Exchange
- Wisdom of Living in Harmony with Nature
- Overcoming Diseases and Pursuing a Healthy Life
- The Impact of Science and Technology on Humanities, Cultures and Life-worlds
These themes will correspond well to the convening of dedicated Panels, and so we would kindly ask that abstracts submitted should consider these themes closely. We would also request all colleagues to please consider expressing interest in playing a role as Chair or Moderator for a Panel discussion based on one of these four themes, and to contact us if you would be interested in playing this important role.
Financial Support
In terms of support, we are very pleased to confirm that authors of all abstracts accepted will be supported with local accommodation and subsistence costs in Wuhan over the course of the Conference, thanks to the generosity of Wuhan University, who have offered to cover these costs.
Further to this, we are also pleased to confirm that the British Council Enabling Grant (Re)-Connecting Research in China provides opportunity for financial support for up to an expected 12 UK scholars with international flights and visa costs for travel to China. We intend to award these grants to authors for papers which align well with the proposed themes and which would be presented in Panels addressing these themes. Early Career Researchers are especially encouraged to apply. Funding can be provided for selected papers for presentation in Panels.
If colleagues would like to apply for financial support in this way, they should please complete the following short application form (approx five minutes to complete) once abstracts have also been submitted. Applicants may also copy and paste their abstracts into the form (as well as submitting directly by email, as per the Call for Papers). Please note that the deadline for applications of international travel has been extended in line with the revised deadline for paper submissions, so all funding applications should also be made by 15 August 2023.
