Clinical Academic Training Hub

Why choose the University of Exeter?

The University of Exeter is one of the world’s top 150 universities in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings and is ranked in the top 20 amongst UK. More than 99% of our research is of international quality, with 89% internationally excellent and 47% World-leading, according to the 2021 Research Excellence Framework.

Our Medical School was established in 2012, and now hosts a range of health and life sciences courses including Medicine, Medical Imaging, Medical Sciences and Nursing. We work closely with NHS and other organisations across the region to support clinical academic training, with the South West Deanery consistently ranking very highly across all fields in the GMC National Training Survey 2022.

We have an excellent track record of supporting our clinical academic trainees to go on to achieve research training awards and funding. For example, previous trainees have been awarded competitive doctoral and advanced fellowships from organisations including NIHR, Wellcome, Diabetes UK and Kidney Research UK. Former trainees have also gone on to be appointed as research active NHS Consultants in a range of specialties and to senior clinical academic posts at Exeter.

Professionals undergoing clinical academic training at Exeter have access to a range of excellent and world-leading resources and expertise to support their research and career development. Our newly funded NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) has a focus on cutting edge translational research to improve health outcomes for patients and the public. The BRC supports health, medical, and clinical research professionals to learn more about experimental medicine/translational research and its delivery.

Applied Health Research expertise and supervision is available in the NIHR Peninsula Applied Research Collaboration (PenARC) a collaboration between the University of Exeter, University of Plymouth and the NHS Trusts across the South West, as well as through our Departments of Health and Community Sciences and Public Health and Sports Sciences. Exeter is a member of the NIHR School for Primary Care Research and the NIHR School for Public Health Research enabling those training with us to have access to wider national expertise, training, PhD and postdoctoral fellowships. The Exeter UKCRC registered Clinical Trials Unit, the national NIHR Research Support Service, and NIHR Exeter Clinical Research Facility all provide clinical research space, staff, offices, and expertise on which trainees can draw.
