Exeter academic staff have the opportunity to teach on the Globalisation Programme. Professors at member universities are invited, by twice yearly calls, to propose modules they could teach.

Academic staff receive payment for each module/course that they teach, and receive a travel and housing allowance along with support to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Opportunities for Exeter Students and Staff

Being a member of VIU affords Exeter students and staff great opportunities to study, teach and engage in research cooperation with partners in a global network.

The main opportunities are summarised below in order to provide a brief overview of each of them. More detailed information – along with information on how and when to apply for programmes and initiatives – can be found on the ‘Apply to take part’ page, as well as on VIU’s website. Our VIU Coordinator Stuart Westhead can be contacted with questions relating to VIU and Exeter too, at s.westhead@exeter.ac.uk

Exeter undergraduates have the opportunity to study on the Globalisation Programme. Students from the member universities form a cohort in an interdisciplinary environment that develops their capacity for critical thinking and creatively engaging with new ideas. Around 140 students take part each term and can choose from a wide array of modules that are taught in English by visiting professors from the member universities.

Interested students should contact Exeter’s Global Opportunities Office at outbound@exeter.ac.uk, or visit the Global Opportunities website for more information.

Graduate Activities

The International PhD Academy presents an intensive training opportunity open to PhD students, post-docs, and young researchers from the member institutions of VIU.

Graduate Seminar programmes are thematic intensive seminars given in a concentrated period on subjects of universal interest, open to a broad spectrum of disciplines. They are suited to Master's and PhD students and are open to candidates from all VIU member institutions.

VIU provides financial support to cover travel and accommodation costs from participation in the International PhD Academy and Graduate Seminar programmes.

VIU supports the development of Summer/Autumn/Winter schools - intensive taught programmes offered each year. They focus on specific themes that are of common interest to the members, such as sustainable development, preservation of cultural heritage, and the challenges facing society due to ageing populations.

They may be addressed to students of varying levels, and are open to applicants outside of the VIU membership. Typically fees are charged for taking part in Summer/Autumn/Winter schools.
