Emma Sweeney
Insessional Academic Manager
Emma Sweeney has a background in finance and business, working for eight years in banking and commodities before moving into education. She has travelled extensively in Latin America, Asia and Australasia, and taught Business English in Bolivia and Spain. More recently, as a lecturer at Birkbeck College, University of London, she taught Language and Intercultural Communication on the MA in Intercultural Communication for Business. She retains a keen interest in intercultural communication, in particular the way English is used as an international language for business.

Jo Hughes
Insessional module coordinator
English for General Purposes
Jo coordinates the Insessional English for General Purposes at INTO University of Exeter and also has special responsibility for science support courses. Her duties include teaching academic writing and presenting for science, Oral Communication Skills, debate-based Current Issues, and classes for family members of Exeter University students. She also teaches the intermediate Credit-Rated Academic Listening and Speaking course (ELC2727).
Jo’s experience in Academic English teaching includes 8 years at a Japanese University, 3 years at a Chinese University and several years working part-time doing teacher training and ESP courses at the College of St Mark and St John in Plymouth. She has taught English for a wide variety of more specialised reasons: from military officers to hairdressers and has had experience teaching in South America, Scandinavia and Asia.
Responsibilities at INTO University of Exeter:
- Coordinator of English for General English [Social Communication and Culture] for undergraduate and postgraduate study
- Liaison with science colleges for the creation of support courses for scientists
- Creation of materials for General English and Science Classes
Master in Arts by research (Medieval History) (University of Durham), Postgraduate Diploma in the Conservation of Books and Library Materials (West Dean College; affiliated to the University of Southampton) Diploma in TEFL (RSA), Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in History and Archaeology (Leeds University)

Dilys Thorp
Teacher
Dilys has a long track record in teaching EAP as well as in training teachers and teacher trainers in this field, both overseas (China, Hong Kong, Japan, Eastern Europe, Oman, S. Africa) as well as in the UK. Before joining INTO she was, for 17 years, a Senior Lecturer in Linguistics and English Language Teaching at the University of West London. She has also held academic appointments at the Universities of Aston, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol, where, amongst other areas, she was the Module Lead in Materials Evaluation and Development on the Masters in Education programme. She has had a long involvement with BALEAP where she has given a number of conference papers (several published) and has also served as the institutional representative. Other relevant experience includes an appointment as Research Fellow at Birmingham University investigating the nature of IELTS answers to the Writing exam, and an appointment as Research Fellow at the Peninsula Medical School to investigate the nature of reflective writing. Her interests are wide ranging and include inter-ethnic communication and academic writing, particularly looking at stance. At INTO she has created and run a Graduate Diploma course in Law and Legal English, and has also taught in-sessional and pre-sessional law students for several years.

Dr John Straker
EAP teacher
John teaches academic writing on Insessional support courses and provides one-to-one writing tutorials.
Before joining the University of Exeter, John taught on the Insessional programme at SOAS, University of London, and English language and TESOL at Univalle, Colombia.
He taught English as a Second Language in secondary schools and further education colleges for many years.
John is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Martin Darling
Subject Specific English and General English
Martin is currently the Interim Assistant Academic Manager for the Insessional programme and has taught on both the Insessional and Foundation programmes across a range of disciplines from Business to the Social Sciences.
He has been teaching for over twenty years in a number of different contexts, including: language classes in Spain, the Spanish military, the Royal Navy, oil refinery workers in Saudi Arabia, further education in the UK and English for Academic Purposes in higher education in both the UK and Finland.
