PhD Students
Joanna L’Heureux
Joanna’s PhD research is investigating the oral microbiome in relation to cardiovascular health and older age. This research topic encompasses a broad range of fields, including molecular microbiology, genetics and biochemistry.
This research also involves using a variety of techniques, such as venepuncture, ozone-based chemiluminescence for the measurement of nitrate and nitrite, and bacterial sequencing.
Areas of interest:
- Molecular biology
- Biochemical techniques for measurement of nitrate/nitrite
- Next-generation sequencing
- Microbiology
Jordan Moore
Jordan will be working on a PhD project for the next 4 years, entitled “Spatio-Temporal analysis of insulinitis in Type 1 Diabetes”. The aim is to use mathematics from general relativity and model the beta cells and the islets of Langerhan in the pancreas on a lorentzian type manifold.
Primary areas of mathematical expertise:
- Numerical analysis
- Riemannian geometry
- PDE’s
- Dynamical systems
Ammarah Tariq
My research focus is to understand spindle formation during mitosis. Although many proteins involved in spindle formation have been identified, how exactly the dynamics of their interactions contribute to proper spindle assembly is not fully understood. Our laboratories goal is to integrate the identification of components contributing to mitotic spindle morphogenesis with the characterization of their biological function. I am supervised by Dr James Wakefield and Professor Christian Soeller.
Techniques:
- Cell biology
- Biochemistry
- Proteomics
- Super-resolution microscopy
- Image analysis
Freddy Wordingham
Research interests focus on the creation and adaptation of numerical codes to simulate a broad range of physical systems. Current work involves the adaptation of the radiative transfer code TORUS, a program designed to simulation Astrophysical systems, to simulate biological models with the aim of advancing current methods of treating Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer.
Areas of expertise:
- Code Design & Development
- Numerical Simulations
- Modelling
- Web Design & Development
