Foreign Policy and Strategy

Foreign policy and strategy are key research areas in CAIS. They include the historical evolution and cultural constituents of US and UK foreign policy, the relative durability of US unipolarity and the trivers of the ‘special relationship’. Scholars associated with the Center have provided novel insights into the foreign policy of rising powers like China and Russia, as well as on the forces shaping the international conduct of states in regions as diverse as the Balkans, Central and South East Asia, and the Middle East and North Africa.

Cutting-edge research has been conducted on the influence of public opinion, lobbies, leaders’ psychological traits, and religious forces in foreign policy-making. We have key expertise in the UK's National Strategy in the context of changing defence priorities; BREXIT and changes in transatlantic grand strategy, European security, British cyber security policy, counter-insurgency and counterterrorism strategies.
