Peace, Security, and Political Violence
Organised violence is a central analytical and political problem for the discipline of International Relations. Our research in this area has been pioneering, leading the way with the establishment of Critical Military Studies as a discreet domain of scholarly endeavour. We also focus on the theory and practice of terrorism, the relationship between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and political violence, and more traditional domains such as nuclear strategy. Our research has also enabled scholars, policy makers and publics to widen and deepen their understanding of the causes of state surveillance and repression, as well as peace and war.
Working with partners around the world, as well as students in the department, CAIS researchers have developed novel methods and new datasets for the study of peacekeeping and peace-making, terrorist propaganda, intractable conflicts, civilizational frictions, or the transformation of urban environments by war. Our research has had significant impact in government, non-governmental and international organizations.
