Thursday 16 Mar 2017Dynamics Seminar: Glycolytic Oscillations, Insulin Pulsatility, and Regime Change

Richard Bertram - Florida State University

Living Systems Seminar Room A 14:30-15:30

In this presentation I will demonstrate how mathematical analysis has driven the design of experiments that test a hypothesis for the mechanism of pulsatility in insulin secretion. Dynamical structures and concepts such as nullclines, bifurcations, and bistability have all been used to design specific experiments that were subsequently tested in the lab. These experiments, plus others, have helped to establish this mechanism, oscillations in glycolysis, as the leading candidate for insulin pulsatility. Sometimes knowing a little dynamics can take you a long way.
