Dr Andy Cunliffe

Dr Andy Cunliffe is an Oppenheimer Associate Professor of Geography. He is an environmental scientist leading an applied research agenda to improve understanding of how landscapes function and can be managed for sustainable social and ecological benefit. With particular expertise in geospatial tools, remote sensing, spatial ecology, and systems thinking, his work centres on Terrestrial Ecosystem Science and Services.

Dr Cunliffe leans into applied science, where he believes he can have the greatest positive impact in developing and sharing interdisciplinary insights into sustainable ecosystem function within social-ecological systems frameworks. He also engages closely with non-academic partners to co-design research that meets their needs, acting as the enabling link between partner needs, funder aspirations, and targeted expertise to develop mutually supportive and fundable applied research activities.

He champions Open Research practice and nurtures an inclusive and supportive culture for the trainees in his TESS Lab research group. He also directs Exeter's Oppenheimer Research Programme in African Landscape Systems (OPALS), a six-year applied research programme contributing to equitable environmental sustainability in Africa.
