I am a research scientist with an interest in how humans learn, perform, and behave. I enjoy understanding what makes a person perform at their best, the circumstances under which learning is best achieved, and the specific psychophysiological mechanisms at play. Doing this in industries where performance and training is pressurised and safety-critical adds an extra layer of complexity which keeps me motivated. I see myself as a cognitive scientist given that I primarily apply theories and methods from cognitive psychology, but I also borrow from neuroscience, social psychology, human factors, ergonomics, and several other fields.
Of most interest to me is the interaction between humans and technology. I use technology to deep dive into the psychology and physiology of human performance (e.g. eye tracking to understand skilled performance and cognition), but recently my research has also been focused on the technology it’s-self (e.g. eXtended Reality (XR) devices), and the adoption and implementation of technology into learning or performance contexts. This focus on the technology has led me to develop a line of research interested in health-related applications of XR, their use by health care workers, and their impact on patient groups (e.g. the use of Virtual Reality in care provision).
I hold several roles in academia and industry which enable me to undertake this work. At the University of Exeter I oversee a research group interested in applied cognitive psychology and immersive technology (VITAL); I am the director of research for a department within the University of Exeter medical school; and I am a lead academic in two of Exeter’s designated research networks (Immersive technology, and Defence & Security). Outside of the University I am co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) at Cineon (www.cineon.ai) an immersive technology and data science company who develop XR solutions; I am advisor to several organisations and groups in health, sport, and defence; and I co-chair a NATO research task group interested in XR.
