Postgraduate Taught Study

At Master's level, members of the Centre convene and teach on medieval-facing modules within their own Departments, which offer Master’s degrees in their specific fields (such as the MA History, MA English Literary Studies, MA Global Literatures and Cultures, MA Classics and Ancient History, and MA Islamic Studies).

Postgraduate Research in Medieval Studies

The majority of postgraduate research students in medieval studies at Exeter are working towards a PhD. At Exeter, as at many other universities, doctoral students will typically begin enrolled as an MPhil student in their chosen discipline, before transferring to PhD status after an oral examination at the end of their first year of research (informally known as an ‘upgrade viva’). The MPhil can also, however, be studied as a standalone qualification.

If you’re interested in postgraduate research at Exeter, your first step should be to identify a potential supervisor. The University’s website offers a range of helpful advice on applications, but all members of the Centre are happy to be contacted.

The range of programme titles found across the Centre’s PGR community reflects the variety of subject areas explored in the Centre as a whole. Many Departments offer their own PhD programmes, and PGRs in the Centre are accordingly working towards the MPhil / PhD in (among others) English, Modern Languages, and History. The History Department also hosts PhD students in Medieval Studies and Cornish Studies. Potential supervisors are always happy to offer advice on suitable pathways for applicants, although the precise pathway that a PGR chooses has no bearing on their membership of the Centre.
