Jim obtained his PhD from the Meteorology Department (supervisor Keith Shine, FRS) in 1995. Subsequently he worked as a Princeton University post-doctoral researcher at the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, USA before joining the Met Office in 1998. He joined the University of Exeter in 2010 at 20%FTE, but has since moved to 80%FTE at the University of Exeter.
Jim has won research grants in excess of £7m in the field of atmospheric science where his research focusses in particular on the role of atmospheric aerosols in climate and on the cooling impacts of aerosol to combat the impacts of climate change.
